Project Title:Cassava Stem Core as Heat Insulator

Project Overview:
The objective of this project is to investigate the suitability of the soft spongy material obtained from the cassava stem core to be used as a substitute for polystyrene.

Polystyrene is used widely as thermal insulation materials for food storing. Toxic from the polystyrene container can be released and then absorbed by the food. This can be harmful to the users. In addition, polystyrene is not biodegradable.

The cassava stem core that we used was obtained from the middle part of cassava stems. It is the pith, soft sponge-like central cylinder of the stems of most flowering plants tissue.

It has better heat insulating features than polystyrene and its biodegradable nature means we can reduce the pollution of the environment if this is used widely in the future.

We conducted some experiments to test its ability and suitability in thermal insulation. From the experiments, we found that the cassava stem core could be a better alternative to polystyrene. It has lower thermal conductivity compared to polystyrene, low density, does not produce toxic gases when burnt, elastic biodegradable.

We believe that further studies should be carried out to see its potential in the variety of angles to replace the universal human reliance on petroleum-based polystyrene.

Project Title:Egg Separator Machine

Project Overview:
This project is an invention to help other people, especially those who bake for commercial purposes and housewives. The idea is to create a machine that can help them separate the egg yolk, egg whit and egg shell in a very short period of time – 3 seconds for 1 egg and 15 seconds for 5 eggs.

First, we had to find a suitable range of voltage required to operate this machine – 8 volts. Then, we put the eggs into the egg holder one by one. Next, close the sleeve cover until the indicator lights up. Turn on the switch and the machine will break the eggs to separate the yolk, white and shell. Remove the shell of the eggs and you’ll have the egg whites and egg yolks separated.

 This machine can separate the egg white, egg yolk and egg shell in an average of 10 seconds for 5 eggs. It doesn’t matter if the eggs are an A, B or even C grade. The possibility for this machine to fail is only about 4%. The percentage of egg yolks that can be separated from the egg whites is 96%. From our tests, we realized that only 2 out of 50 eggs failed to be separated.

 In conclusion, we believe that our project can be used to help those in the baking industries and housewives. We also believe that our project can be commercialized because of its low cost and it is environmentally friendly. This project only requires a small amount of electricity and no usage of fuel to work. The machine is also very convenient and easy to carry around. Therefore, we believe that our project can be a success and contribute a lot for mankind.
